Suspending supplementary insurance

Anyone moving abroad or taking out equivalent insurance can pause their supplementary insurance policies

Are you packing your bags for an adventure abroad or do you have equivalent insurance through your employer, for example? Then it’s very easy to pause many of Sympany’s supplementary insurance policies. This allows you to save on premiums while still remaining flexible – and means that you can come back at any time. Everything you need to know about it can be found here.

In what cases can I suspend my supplementary insurance?

Supplementary insurance policies are usually taken out for life and should not be cancelled lightly. After all, if you want the policies back, you will have to answer health questions again. Depending on your state of health, you might no longer be accepted unconditionally. But sometimes supplementary insurance just doesn’t fit into your life and it’s good to know that you can take a break. This is possible in the following cases:

  • If you move abroad, the insurance usually ends. However, if you suspend it, you can continue it after returning to Switzerland.
  • You should avoid double insurance, as you pay double premiums and still only receive benefits reimbursed by one insurance company. For example, if your employer offers a group contract that is equivalent to the supplementary insurance that you have taken out privately, you can pause your private supplementary insurance. If you move to a different employer, you can continue your private contract.

Questions and answers about suspending supplementary insurance

  • While your supplementary insurance is paused, you’re not eligible to receive any benefits.
  • You can apply to extend the pause on your policy as many times as you wish.
  • If Sympany rejects your application, your policy will end on the date on which you move away from Switzerland or on the date on which your other, equivalent insurance cover starts.
  • If you move back to Switzerland or if your alternative insurance cover ends, you’ll need to provide us with the relevant evidence (registration certification from your communal administration or confirmation that your other policy has ended and the date on which that policy ended).
  • Suspended supplementary insurance policies can be cancelled as usual. Cancellation dates ›

Suspending the supplementary insurance has significant benefits for you:

  • You do not have to terminate it in full, but can put it on hold. As soon as you return to Switzerland or your other, equivalent insurance policy has ended, you can resume your reliable insurance with Sympany.
  • During the suspension, you only pay a small premium of 10%.

Disadvantages could be the following:

  • You pay a small premium even though you do not receive any benefits from this insurance policy during this period.
  • You will also need to complete a health questionnaire so that we can assess your current state of health. This may result in us not continuing your contract or only continuing it with a reservation.
  • You can pause your supplementary insurance for between three months and six years. At that point, you can apply for an extension.
  • Any application to pause your insurance or pause your insurance for longer will be treated as a new application. This means that we require an up-to-date health declaration and are entitled to reject your application.
  • While your health insurance policy is paused, you still have to pay a reduced premium of 10%.
  • If you’re moving abroad: You also have to provide Sympany with a contact address in Switzerland.
  • You have taken out supplementary insurance that can be suspended.

Please submit the following evidence by E-Mail:

  • If you’re moving abroad: certificate of departure from your communal administration
If you’re being covered by another policy: Evidence (e.g. policy documentation)
  • Up-to-date health declaration
  • If you’re submitting an application to pause your policy for longer: proof of address abroad or proof of alternative insurance cover and up-to-date health declaration

The usual terms and conditions apply when switching to another supplementary insurance policy. In particular, a medical examination will be needed when switching to higher insurance cover (e.g. from semi-private to private supplementary hospital insurance). You can only suspend the basic insurance if you are undertaking military service, civilian service or civil defence. More information on military service, civilian service and civil protection ›

You cannot pause your basic insurance if you move abroad. In most cases, you won’t be required to take out insurance in Switzerland after you’ve moved and your policy will end on your moving date. But don’t worry – once you have returned, you can easily take out basic insurance again with a Swiss health insurance provider of your choice. We would, of course, recommend Sympany. :) When it comes to basic insurance, insurers are obliged to accept policyholders and cannot reject your application. There can’t be any exclusions either.
