First aid kit: everything you need for a relaxing holiday

The holidays are coming up and anticipation is rising. No matter where you’re going, take the time to fill up your first aid kit – preferably in waterproof packaging. In a car, you should store medicinal products in as cool a place as possible, especially in the summer, in a cool box or under the passenger seat. On the train, you should ideally use a bag which you have with you at your seat.

What should every first aid kit contain?

  • Material for wound treatment
  • Thermometer
  • Painkillers and – particularly for babies and infants – an antipyretic
  • Remedies for diarrhoea and constipation
  • Remedies for nausea and vomiting
  • Anti-allergic medication in case allergic reactions occur (eye/nose-drops or tablets)
  • Insect spray and sunscreen
  • Anti-allergic gel or drops against itching and insect bites
  • All medication that you need to take regularly

Check the expiry date printed on the packaging. You should not use the medication after it has expired. You should therefore check your pharmaceutical supplies in good time before leaving and write a checklist.

Other medication for carefree holiday fun

  • Eye drops for conjunctivitis, which occurs more frequently in warm countries
  • Wound and healing ointment
  • Medication for coughs
  • Medication for colds

Disinfection and protective masks

Especially if you don’t know much about the hygienic conditions at the holiday resort, it is advisable to take sufficient supplies of disinfectant and disposable gloves. Make sure your luggage also contains an appropriate quantity of protective masks.

Sunscreen

Remember to use a sufficiently high sun protection factor – particularly for children. A sunscreen spray can be applied more easily than a lotion. Check whether the sunscreen is waterproof, so that perspiration and swimming don’t reduce the protection.

You can buy products for allergies and skin impurities for sensitive skin and specifically for the facial area in pharmacies. Replace last year’s opened sunscreen, as the effectiveness diminishes. You can soothe minor sunburn with an ointment for wounds and burns and a cooling after sun lotion.

Wound treatment

Abrasions, lacerations or cuts can happen quickly. A first aid kit from a pharmacy makes sense in case there is an emergency. For example, a small bag with disposable gloves, scissors, disinfectant, plasters, sterile compresses, gauze bandages and elastic bandages.

Please note: You won’t be allowed to take scissors in hand luggage.

Personal medication

If you need to take medication regularly due to a chronic illness, make sure to take a sufficient supply of it. Ideally, it should be packed in your hand luggage, in case your suitcase arrives late or not at all at your travel destination. Make sure you have enough supplies well in advance of your departure.

With prescription drugs, it makes sense to keep a copy of the prescription or a multi-lingual doctor’s certificate. This will ensure that you don’t have problems at customs.

Contraception

Don’t forget contraception: if you’re travelling by air, the pill should always be in your hand luggage; don’t forget about large time differences when taking it. Condoms don’t just protect against unwanted pregnancy, they also protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

Vaccinations

Are your vaccinations up to date? Apart from Tetanus, Diphtheria, Measles, Hepatitis B and Polio, other vaccinations might be recommended or even mandatory at your destination.

The reverse side of your insurance card is the European insurance card. It makes it easier to get medical treatment in the EU and settle the bill in emergencies.

You’ll also find the emergency number for medical emergencies abroad on the reverse side.
