Brief overview of the classic standard model
Advantages:
- Free choice of doctor
- Access to Sympany’s telemedical services: eedoctors, Medgate – 24/7 advice and treatment with no sitting in waiting rooms
Disadvantages:
- No premium discount
- If you have a telemedical consultation through Medgate, you will contribute towards the costs by paying a franchise or deductible, whereas this service is free for callmed 24, casamed pharm and flexhelp24 policyholders.
Under alternative insurance models, you do not get a free choice of doctor. If you have a health complaint, you will get in touch with your first point of contact for the model you are insured under (e.g. family doctor, Medgate etc.). You can lower your premium by increasing your franchise, opting out of accident cover or paying your premium annually or every six months (discount).
I like being able to choose freely when it comes to my basic insurance and that's why I appreciate Sympany’s classic model. I always decide for myself whether I will go to the family doctor first or straight to a specialist. As I have increased my excess, I can still save on premiums.

Medgate’s telephone/video consultations are available 24/7. Please have your customer number (9 digits) ready. You will find this number on your insurance card, policy or benefit statement.
For classic policyholders, the costs for telemedical advice and treatment are billed in line with the same tariff as treatment at a medical practice. Calls to Medgate telemedicine will be billed at your usual rate.
What does it mean if I choose the classic health insurance plan?
No. This model lets you choose your own doctor anywhere in Switzerland. If you like, you can go straight to a specialist when you're ill.
No, you don’t have to specify a family doctor. Despite this, we recommend that you do always go to the same doctor. They will know you and your state of health best and will have an overview of your treatments.
For some treatments, you will need a prescription from your doctor. This applies to physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, nurses, Spitex (home care) and diabetes counselling.
