laa domestic employees risk insurance in brief

If you pay a person directly, you are considered an employer and must take out accident insurance for the employed person. There is only one exception to this rule, namely so-called pocket money jobs for youngsters. If a person under the age of 25 earns a maximum of CHF 750 per year from one employer, the employer does not have to insure them against accidents. Typical pocket money jobs include babysitting, tutoring, shopping or pet care. Domestic work information sheet ›

That depends on the workload.

  • If the employed person works for you for less than eight hours per week, you only have to take out insurance against occupational accidents and occupational illnesses for them. In this case, the employed person must insure themselves against non-occupational accidents and include accident cover in their health insurance. More about accident cover in basic insurance ›
  • If the workload is eight or more hours per week, you as an employer are also responsible for insuring against non-occupational accidents.

Does it sound complicated? We would be happy to advise you! Further information can also be found in the Domestic work information sheet from the OASI/Invalidity Insurance Information Centre.

The law is clear here: Anyone who fails to insure their domestic employees against accidents as prescribed is liable to prosecution and must pay replacement premiums. More about compulsory accident insurance ›
