Premiums for 2021: your new policy is coming soon

The Federal Council published details of the new premiums at the end of September. Here’s a brief summary of the key changes.

You’ll receive your new policy documents, including details of your premiums for the coming year, by the end of this month. Most people will see their premiums increase very slightly, stay the same or even fall. Those who turned 18 or 25 in 2020 face higher basic insurance premiums. They move on to a higher legal age group and their discount drops. Once you reach the age of 19, you also need to choose an excess.

Why do premiums change?

The basic insurance premiums for all health insurers are reviewed by the federal government each year. They must cover costs and are based on expected healthcare costs. The correlation is simple: if higher costs are expected, the premiums for the next year will increase accordingly. More information >

Age-dependent discounts also play a role. At Sympany, children (up to the age of 18) are eligible for a discount of up to 75% on their basic insurance, and young adults (aged between 19 and 25) can get a discount of up to 25%. Premiums for supplementary insurance policies also are graded according to ages.

Frequently asked questions

When will I get my premium invoice for January 2021?

You will receive it in mid-December. Why so late? Because at the end of the year, we have to make sure any changes our policyholders have made are reflected in their policies, for example if they have moved house or switched their insurance model by 30 November.

How can I pay my premium?

We recommend paying by eBill or LSV direct debit to save both paper and time. You can pay your premium monthly, quarterly, every six months or annually. More information: paying invoices >

Who can I contact if I have any questions?

Our Customer Services team will be happy to help – from 8 am to 6 pm over the phone from 12 October until 30 November 2020, then returning to normal opening hours of 8 am to 5 pm. Our advisory centre in Basel is open to assist you from 8 am to 5 pm, and on request consultations are also possible until 6 pm until 30 November.
